Antique Set of four 19th-century spirits/liquor barrels or kegs, they come from England and date to the Victorian/early Edwardian period. They read simply, “Gin”, “Brandy”, “I Whisky” and “S Whisky”, all of which are labelled in gold bold lettering.
The barrels are stunningly decorated with a countryside theme, with lovely poppies and wheat heads, along with a beautiful flowered pattern.
Each one has 4 gold bands running around the body of each of the barrels, with a soft, creamy/ pale base colour.
There is a slight variation in colours between each barrel; this, I believe, is because the spirits have soaked into the barrels over time.
They all come with their original working solid brass taps. The taps have London engraved on them (see pictures).
They also all come with the original drip bowls, which are extremely rare to find, and nearly all to most are missing. They are Complete with their hanging cradles, of which one looks to be a later replacement; however, this is hardly noticeable and doesn’t affect the appearance in any way.
Two drip bowls have “ Made In England” stamped on the bottom.
All four barrels have a painted mark of “B21” on the underside.
Overall, these are in excellent condition. The Gin barrel has two clips out of the lid (see photo). It also has a long hairline crack down the back of the barrel; this doesn’t affect the barrel in any way at all. It’s complete and structurally good. All other lids are in good condition, and all the barrels have crazing to the porcelain, which is normal for an item of this age. There are a few minor Faint hairlines, but generally, they are in excellent condition. Slight fading in places to the decoration and gold wording, again, nothing you wouldn’t expect from items of this age.
These are hard to come by, as many didn’t survive. This set of four would make a great display in a bar or retail environment. They could be repurposed items and used for plant pots.
Each barrel measures:
13.5inches high
13.5inches wide
9inches depth without tap excluded
11.5inches depth with taps included
