This lovely Fine and extremely rare early LeCoultre Atmos II from the 1940s. This clock is one of the first clocks made right after the “Reutter-Era”. Beautiful gold dial with Roman numerals marked “Swiss made” at 6 o’clock position. The clock is signed with two numbers, 6231 on the movement and 7070 on the top. Since the beginning of manufacture around 1939, the Atmos II calibre has been so reliable, that it has not changed until the development of the calibre 540 in 1982. And it has indeed been one of the reasons for the success story of this model. Excellent condition. A true collector´s item.

These movements started at serial number 1001, and the Atmos I case serial numbers at that time were already at about 2500, thus a difference of 1500 +/-. Just under 400 movements were retrofitted to the earlier Reutter Atmos that originally had non-serial numbered movements made in Cluses, France, so by the time the Atmos II was commercially produced starting in 1939, the average difference between the case number (highest) and movement number (lowest) was about 1100. For example, Atmos II with case serial 7038 has movement number 5930, a difference of 1108.

LeCoultre didn’t use a lot of control as to when movements were used relative to the case numbers (which were the production control series), so we see a wide variance in the serial number differences, as low as 400 and as high as 2000. In this instance, this clock’s difference appears to be much less than normal.

The name infers that it runs on atmospheric pressure changes. It runs on temperature changes. It winds with as little as a 1-degree change in temperature. This is accomplished by an ingenious set of bellows, filled with a gas compound that is very volatile at normal room temperature and causes the bellows to expand and contract with a small temperature change. This expansion and contraction through a small chain, pulleys and a ratchet system wind the mainspring, which powers the clock.

The clock is in full working order.
