Handsome Large Round Serving Bowl from Mason’s Ironstone “Mandalay” testimony to the sheer design and craftsmanship of Mason’s potters, Mason’s Ironstone was made by the English pottery of Charles J. Mason, circa 1813, when he was granted a patent for the earthenware.

Some experts believe that the name ironstone resulted from the fact that the “wares were as hard as iron” Mason’s joined the Wedgwood Group in 1973 and the name is continued on dinnerware.

The large bowl is decorated in typical Imari colourway, with Iron Red, Cobalt Blue and generous use of 22-carat gold combining to stunning effect. The Imari pattern embodies many Japanese and Oriental influences. Imari is the port from where it was most convenient to export Japanese porcelain to Europe and America.

The bowl is in excellent condition only showing minor light marks from being used, with no chips and cracks, and produces that wonderfully satisfying ‘Ping’. Gilding to the scalloped bowl rim and footing is bright and intact.

The large bowl measures 27cm in diameter 11cm high, back stamp reads “MASON’S Patent “Ironstone” (on banner) “Mandalay” “printed and hand-painted”.
